Moonlight Vs 1 – Sun is sinkin’ in the lake The fire’s goin’ strong It’s always been my favorite time And I’ve waited all day long
For stories and for bad jokes Like only grampa knows For battle scars and cold beers And how the laughter flows
Pre Chorus – I said “Papa what’s your secret? How do you stay to young?” He said “I just remind myself, before the day’s begun…”
Chorus – Pay attention to the moonlight Stand outside in the rain Keep that morning star in sight And aint no sunrise ever been in vain
Make it right when ya done wrong Then you sing about it in your own song Make love, don’t just take love every day That’s what I say
Vs 2 – Jagged circle on his chest Where the bullet ripped clean through Is now a crown of thorns In his crucifix tattoo
And with all that liquid courage I told him of my plan To join the U.S. Army So I could be a man
Pre Chorus – He said “War don’t give ya nothing, ‘cept nightmares you can’t shake” “So if you’re lookin’ for advice This is what you take”
Chorus – Pay attention to the moonlight Stand outside in the rain Keep that morning star in sight And aint no sunrise ever been in vain
Make it right when ya done wrong Then you sing about it in your own song Make love, don’t just take love every day
Bridge – That’s what I say to myself with every mile that I run I even wrote it in a letter to my seven month old son Some things you just can’t hear enough, when you’re fighting through each day I know what to do, when I’ve lost my way

I never really knew either of my grandfathers, as they had passed both before I was born and when I was very young. That said, this story is not so much fictional as it is put in a more universal context. For any of us lucky enough to have had them, this song is for those people in our lives who we’ve looked up to; the ones who’ve never steered us wrong; the ones who teach as much through their example as they do with their words. For me those people are my mother and father. I also want to dedicate this song to my friend and longtime brother in musical arms, Michael Hacala, whose father was in his words “the best man I’ll ever know”. |

Though it sounds nothing like it, this tune is inspired by Bob Dylan's "Don't think twice, it's alright". I love his sly sarcasm and laid back delivery over the fantastic guitar part. The surprise ending was inspired by wanting more mandolin in the way that Christopher Walken wants more cowbell. |
